Purpose. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health, will co-sponsor this FOA to support applications from institutions/organizations that propose innovative investigations in primary immunodeficiency diseases with a focus on ex vivo studies with human specimens and on studies with existing or new animal models. This FOA will also support novel clinical strategies, not including clinical trials, to detect primary immunodeficiency diseases, to identify the molecular basis of these diseases, and to develop innovative therapies for primary immunodeficiency diseases. Investigators who have no prior history of receiving independent NIH funding in this field are encouraged to apply.

-Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Conference Grant (R13/U13) applications from applicant organizations for meetings and networks that will facilitate interdisciplinary research partnership among investigators.The goal is to create opportunities for forming strong and effective multi-disciplinary scientific teams to address basic, translational, or clinical research problems in rehabilitation or management of chronic disease, including mental disorders. -Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the R13 grant mechanism -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.

Purpose. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) (http://www2.niddk.nih.gov) on behalf of the NIH Genes, Environment and Health Initiative, solicits Exploratory/Developmental Clinical Research Grant (R21) applications from institutions/ organizations that propose a) clinical studies using information from genome wide association or other genetic studies in common diseases; b) development and assessment of diagnostic, clinical trial, epidemiologic and risk analytic tools for use in clinical research or practice; and c) cost-effectiveness studies of clinical applications of genetic information. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: development of diagnostic or other risk factor algorithms that incorporate genetic data; pilot interventional studies using findings from genetic studies of common diseases or outcomes related to genetic testing for variants identified in common diseases; pilot research on clinical modification of environmental factors known to interact with specific genes variants identified in common diseases; and cost effectiveness studies. The proposed research must focus on using findings from genetic studies of common diseases with complex genetic etiology in clinical or public health settings. Through a Exploratory/Developmental Clinical Research (R21) grant, this FOA will support efforts to produce data that may be useful or pivotal in eventually designing large scale clinical trials or studies.

-Purpose. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) (http://www2.niddk.nih.gov) on behalf of the NIH Genes, Environment and Health Initiative solicits Implementation Planning Grant (U34) applications from institutions/ organizations that propose to plan for multicenter research on a) educational and communication initiatives for health care providers and consumers regarding interpretation of and findings from genetic studies of common diseases and the results of their dissemination and b) behavioral or psychosocial aspects of clinical application of genetic findings. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: research on patient or provider education regarding genetic findings or clinical outcomes of genetic testing; research on patient or provider perceptions of environmental or other risk factors that may have specific interactions with gene variants; and assessments of responses to use of personal genetic information in clinical care and disease prevention. The proposed research must focus on using findings from genetic studies of common diseases with complex genetic etiology in clinical settings. This FOA will support planning and preliminary or feasibility studies for investigator-initiated, multi-center clinical studies through an implementation planning (U34) grant. The U34 planning grant is designed to: (1) permit early peer review of the rationale for the proposed clinical study; (2) permit assessment of the design/protocol of the proposed study; (3) provide support for the development of a complete study protocol and associated documents including a manual of operations, (4) support the development of other essential elements required for the conduct of a clinical study, and (5) carry out key preliminary or feasibility studies. Completion of the required products of a U34 grant is a prerequisite for submission of a multi-center clinical study cooperative agreement (U01) application, which will support the actual conduct of the study. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the U34 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA, RFA-DK-08-004, that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) for development of new, innovative technologies for research integrating human social and/or behavioral science with other disciplines. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the STTR (R41/R42) grant mechanisms for Phase I, Phase II, and Fast-Track applications and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-08-202 that encourages applications under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) (R43/R44) grant mechanisms. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.

Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.

-Purpose. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support research on: 1)causal factors explaining the current patterns observed in the careers of women in biomedical and behavioral science and engineering and variation across different subgroups and 2) the efficacy of programs designed to support the careers of women in these disciplines. Causal factors include individual characteristics, family and economic circumstances, disciplinary culture or practices, and features of the broader social and cultural context. Research on variation among underrepresented minority women and socioeconomically disadvantaged women is encouraged. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIH intends to commit a total of approximately $3 million to this initiative and anticipates making 6 to 8 awards through this announcement. Direct costs are limited to $250,000 per year for a four (4) year period.

-Purpose. The purpose of the Neurological Academic Development Award (K12) is to facilitate and support the career development of pediatric neurologists who have made a commitment to independent research careers. -Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Institutional Program Award (K12) mechanism. The NINDS K12 program provides support for up to three years of supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the funds available and the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.

The Office of Research on Womens Health (ORWH), participating Institutes and Centers (ICs) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) announce a continuing program for administrative supplements to research grants to support individuals with high potential to re-enter an active research career after a qualifying interruption for family or other responsibilities. -The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hereby notify Principal Investigators holding specific types of NIH research grants, listed in the full Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that funds are available for administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented. Although the administrative supplements supported under this program provide funding for less than one percent of all individuals involved in NIH supported research, the NIH has found these awards to be an effective means of encouraging institutions to recruit from currently underrepresented groups. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project. -All NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), the NIH Common Fund, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety (NIOSH, CDC) participate in this program. Candidates eligible for support under this supplement program include individuals at various career levels who come from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in science. Such candidates include individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
