Purpose. The primary purpose of the Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented NIH-supported independent investigators. The program is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent research position with independent NIH or other independent research support at an earlier stage than is currently the norm. Purpose. The purpose of the NIH Independent Scientist Award (K02) is to foster the development of outstanding scientists and enable them to expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research. The K02 award provides three, four, or five years of salary support and protected time for newly independent (see IC provisions) scientists who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus as a means of enhancing their research careers. Each independent scientist career award program must be tailored to meet the individual needs of the candidate. Purpose. The purpose of the NIH Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24) is to provide support to mid-career health-professional doctorates or equivalent who are typically at the Associate Professor level or the equivalent (see Section III. Eligible Individuals) for protected time to devote to patient-oriented research (POR) and to act as research mentors primarily for clinical residents, clinical fellows and/or junior clinical faculty. Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is an initiative of the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research (http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov). The goal of this FOA is to encourage and prepare undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to enter Ph.D. degree programs in the neurosciences. To accomplish this goal, this initiative will provide institutional awards to develop neuroscience research education programs consisting of collaborative partnerships integrated across different educational institutions. Each collaborative research education partnership must have the following components: a) a research-intensive institution that has an established neuroscience or neuroscience related program, b) institution(s) that have a substantial enrollment of undergraduates from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, c) integrated curriculum/academic enhancement and research training activities designed to increase participants preparation to enter doctoral programs in the neurosciences, and d) well-described plans to provide early communication and interaction between participating students and graduate neuroscience programs across the country. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) award mechanism. Research education programs may not be transferred from one institution to another, unless strongly justified (see Section VI.2).

Purpose. This FOA encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications proposing to study mechanisms and management of critical illness and injury, including trauma and neurotrauma, in aging. Studies may be mechanistic, observational, or interventional in nature. Secondary analyses of existing datasets, such as from large observational studies or clinical trials, may be proposed. Animal studies are appropriate in cases where human studies are not feasible. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-044, that encourages applications under the R21 Exploratory/Developmental grant mechanism, PA-10-043, that encourages applications under the R03 Small Research grant mechanism. Purpose: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible institutions as the primary means of supporting predoctoral and postdoctoral research training to help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles related to the Nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research agenda. The primary objective of the T32 program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program supports predoctoral and postdoctoral research training programs (including those with short term research training) at domestic institutions of higher education with the T32 funding mechanism. Note that programs solely for short-term research training should not apply to this announcement, but rather the separate (T35) NRSA Short-Term Institutional program exclusively reserved for predoctoral and/or postdoctoral level short-term research training programs (see PA-10-037). Purpose. This FOA issued under the NIH Common Fund solicits grant applications that propose to continue the NIH National Centers for Biomedical Computing (NCBC) program. These Centers, in conjunction with individual investigator awards, are creating a networked effort to build the computational infrastructure for biomedical computing in the nation. The NCBC program is devoted to all facets of biomedical computing, from basic research in computational science to providing the tools and resources that biomedical and behavioral researchers need to do their work. In addition to carrying out fundamental research, it is expected that the NCBC will play a major role in educating and training researchers to engage in biomedical computing. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the U54 cooperative agreement mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The Common Fund has committed $62M to this program to be distributed over the first 4 years of the program. Participating ICs will provide additional funding for each award, with up to seven Center awards, and will provide 100% of the funding in the final year of the program.
