The Research Project Grant (R01) supports a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in areas representing the specific interests and competencies of the investigator(s). The proposed project must be related to the programmatic interests of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on descriptions of their programs.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) funding opportunity supports the development of new research activities in categorical program areas. The R21 activity code is intended to encourage exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Investigator-Initiated Small Research Grant (R03) funding opportunity supports small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. The R03 activity code supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.

The National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation invite applications for the establishment or continuation of "International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups" (ICBG) to address the interdependence of biodiversity exploration for potential applications in health, with investments in research capacity that support sustainable use of these resources, the knowledge to conserve them, and equitable partnership frameworks among research organizations in the U.S. and low and middle income countries (LMICs). The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide a vehicle for submitting grant applications for investigator-initiated exploratory clinical trials to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). The trials must address research questions related to the mission and goals of the NINDS and may evaluate drugs, biologics, devices, or surgical, behavioral or rehabilitation therapies. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide a vehicle for submitting grant applications to conduct multi-site, randomized, controlled, Phase 3 clinical trials to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). The trials may address questions within the mission and research interests of the NINDS. Biomedical research is becoming more data-intensive as researchers are generating and using increasingly large, complex, and diverse data sets. This era of "Big Data" taxes the ability of biomedical researchers to locate, analyze, and interact with these data (and more generally all biomedical data) and associated software due to the lack of tools, accessibility, and training. In response to these new challenges in biomedical research, NIH has developed the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiative. Under this FOA, BD2K Centers of Excellence are sought to conduct research to advance the science and utility of Big Data in the context of biomedical and behavioral research, and to create innovative new approaches, methods, software, tools, and related resources. The Centers will advance the ability of the biomedical research enterprise to use Big Data by producing tools and resources from early-stage to mature development that will be broadly useful to the research community.

The National Library of Medicine, in conjunction with NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) named above, announces an Administrative Supplement opportunity available to eligible NIH awardees with active R01 grants and, in some cases, with active P01, P20, P30, P50, R21, R21/R33, R24, R34, U01, U19, U24, U54 and UM1 grants (see details above in the Activity Code Section). These administrative supplements provide funds to supported research and center grants in order to enhance the storage, organization, management and use of electronic research data through the involvement of informationists, also known as in-context information specialists.

This initiative will provide an opportunity for investigators to obtain the resources needed to format and align their data prior to uploading or federating with the FITBIR Informatics System.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to publicize the re-competition of Senator Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Centers (MDCRCs). These Centers promote collaborative basic, translational and clinical research and provide important resources that can be used by the national muscular dystrophy research communities. The centers also provide an outstanding environment for the training and career development of new scientists electing to pursue careers conducting research in high priority areas of muscular dystrophy. Center investigators are expected to participate in important community outreach and education efforts to increase awareness and convey the importance and implications of their research activities to the general public.
