Invasive surgical procedures provide the unique ability to record and stimulate neurons within precisely localized brain structures in humans. Human studies using invasive technology are often constrained by a limited number of patients and resources available to implement complex experimental protocols and are rarely aggregated in a manner that addresses research questions with appropriate statistical power. Therefore, this RFA seeks applications to assemble diverse, integrated, multi-disciplinary teams that cross boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome these fundamental barriers and to investigate high-impact questions in human neuroscience. Projects should maximize opportunities to conduct innovative in vivo neuroscience research made available by direct access to brain recording and stimulating from invasive surgical procedures. Projects should employ approaches guided by specified theoretical constructs and quantitative, mechanistic models where appropriate. Awardees will join a consortium work group, coordinated by the NIH, to identify consensus standards of practice, including neuroethical considerations, to collect and provide data for ancillary studies, and to aggregate and standardize data for dissemination among the wider scientific community.

Excellent mentorship and superior training are critical to the development of exceptional future scientists. To recognize the crucial role great mentors play in the development of future leaders in neuroscience, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) created the Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship. This award provides $100,000.00 (direct costs) to up to five (5) faculty members, who have demonstrated a dedication to outstanding mentorship and training, to help foster the research career development of additional students and post-doctorates. NINDS hopes that this tangible award will impress upon the scientific community as a whole, and faculty and institutional leaders in particular, the high value NINDS places on outstanding training and mentorship. Further, NINDS hopes that it encourages institutions to reward individuals not only for outstanding research accomplishments but also for their impact on the lives of others, and the future of neuroscience, through outstanding mentorship and training.

In April 2018, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched theHelping to End Addiction Long-termSMInitiative or HEAL InitiativeSM, an aggressive, trans-agency effort to speed scientific solutions to stem the national opioid public health crisis. As part of this initiative, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with other NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) of the HEAL Initiative, intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications from interdisciplinary teams to elucidate the mechanisms of device-based pain relief. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in summer 2021 with an expected application due date in fall 2021. This FOA will utilize the RM1 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
Expiration Date: Friday, January 1, 2027 NOFO Number: NOT-NS-21-075 Release Date: Tuesday, June 8, 2021 Notice Type: NOT
The purpose of this Notice is to alert the community that the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) plans to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for Materials to Enhance Training in Experimental Rigor (METER), which will support the compilation and refinement of educational materials that will be incorporated into a new cutting-edge online resource that aims to promote awareness, understanding, and practice of fundamental principles of rigorous biomedical research for researchers and other scientists in various career stages and learning environments. These materials will enable acquisition of knowledge and skills to recognize and conduct rigorous experimental research. A companion FOA will solicit applications for Creating an Educational Nexus for Training in Experimental Rigor (CENTER) to build the final web-based platform and produce the digital elements (e.g. videos, graphics, and interactive components) of the online resource (see related Notice). It is expected that METER and CENTER awardees will work collaboratively to evaluate, improve, and disseminate the educational resource. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in Summer 2021 with an expected application due date in October 2021. This FOA will utilize the UE5 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
