Dr. Popko’s research seeks to uncover fundamental aspects of myelinating and demyelinating glial cell development, the myelination process, and the detailed function of the myelin sheath. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the neurological disorders that interfere with the myelination process during the development and maintenance of the myelin sheath in adults. This project aims to increase our understanding of CNS demyelination: how oligodendrocytes respond to cytotoxic stimuli, how they can be protected against harsh, disease-associated conditions, and how they can be replaced so that lost myelin can be reformed.
