Dr. Xi’s research examines mechanisms of brain injury after hemorrhagic stroke, where he has demonstrated that iron contributes to brain edema formation and neurodegeneration following intracerebral hemorrhage. For this project, he will examine the mechanisms of blood component-induced injury after brain hemorrhage, with a focus on early rupture of red blood cells in the hematoma, hematoma/hemoglobin clearance, white matter injury, and the development of hydrocephalus. A better understanding of these mechanisms will inform the development of effective therapies and may limit brain damage following hemorrhage.
