Dr. Chanda's research examines the function of voltage-dependent ion channels, whereby current mechanistic approaches focus on structure rather than on protein dynamics. Thus, for this project, he will probe the molecular driving forces of voltage-gating and how this process is modulated by temperature and ligands. A multi-pronged approach that leverages new and existing tools will systematically characterize the molecular interactions that determine polarity of voltage-gating and temperature sensitivity in voltage-gated ion channels. This experimental approach may provide novel insights into the mechanisms of voltage gating and its regulation by temperature in voltage-gated ion channels and lay the groundwork for development of new therapeutics.
